Thinking about this some more, if you wanted to do a Helivan as a conventional MTR layout, then a Wessex/S-58 would make a good rotor-donor since it's empty and MTO weights are only a little higher than the Skyvan's. It doesn't help you with engine pods though (except a nice pair of nozzles) nor with a tail boom, since the Helivan would require a high-mounted lollypop-stick-style one.

There's a lot of Wessex kits about, but the radial-engined S-58 would probably be easier to convert to clamshell doors.

Dimensions are tricky since many refences don't make it clear whether they're including rotor heights/spans in their figures or not, but the height of the Wessex/S-58 looks to be at least in the right ballpark to use the Skyvan's wings and struts (you could always change the angle of the latter, of course).

The Wesvan would probably look like a Bristol version of the Twin Pioneer.... ;D

Contrarotors.  A Kamov Ka-25 should work as a donor, numbers are little bit higher but should work well & you won't have to do anything much more than hack off the engines & rotor & slap them on.  The Ka-25 would need a little more work if you wanted a loading ramp.

Well for those not following the GBs, I'm actually doing the egg-beater Helivan now.

However, the main reason for posting here is Another Evil Idea (TM):

How about doing a Skyvan as a tour plane (yes, tour bus might be more appropriate...  :rolleyes:) for this lot, in the mould of a budget-price (budgie-price?) Ed-Force One:

There is/was even a spin-off group (don't quite understand what went on) called "6-Ton Budgie", which was one of the band's original names before they shortened it.

Given the band's origin, their limited success, their quirky humour and the Skyvan's short range and small size, "WORLD TOUR OF WALES" might be an appropriate slogan....  ;D

The band have whiff-form too. When Roger Dean did this album cover for them, he made a model of it - got a pic of  it somewhere:

The Skyvan features as the main aircraft in the recent animated movie "Rio".  The bird smugglers use one for their nefarious deeds.

I remember seeing Skyvans and 330's and 360's as a kid flying from Sydneham being tested then the Tucano's appeared.

Always liked the C-23 and was disappointed the RAF never got them.

The second drawing shows the placement for the ARMY and serial legends, the numbers that are circled are the rivet lines on the model.

All this Skyvan activity reminds me I've had a part built one for at least 15 yrs! I should DO something with it......

How about kitbashing one with a Rotodyne?
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Yeah have to agree a 'tactical' gunship Sherpa with a 20mm M61 and 7.62mm rotary gun, FLIR turret under its nose, and a hardpoint under each wing for a couple of Hellfire ASM's  sounds like a practical and workable concept. It's STOL/rough field capability allowing it to support COIN ops.
Also a COIN airborne Command, Control and Communications spcialised variant of the Sherpa would be a good and practical application, with antennas, data link and Satcom bulges on its upper fuselage!!

I've been trying to purchase one of those Sherpa models for sometime on EvilBay without much success, Kitnut.  They go for IMO silly prices nowadays.   I'm starting to think it might be easier to purchase one of those evil "Kiln dried, Executive wooden desktop" models from the Philippines...   :banghead:
