Hey guys; while I was drawing this timeline for an ongoing project I had a great ,,What-if" idea !

I noticed that between the abandoned Shenyang J-13 and the later Su-27 purchase there is a big gap ... just marked by the green circle and x ...

Thinking about the chosen high-low-mix for the PLAAF now consisting of CAC J-10 and SAC J-11 (Su-27) I asked myself if there have been any studies for an indigenous heavy forth generation fighter in the class of the F-15 or Su-27 by Chengdu and Shenyang ... or even Xian, Nanchang ????

So let's help me designing the missing link   – at best two of them – like two competing designs from Chengdu and Shenyang which should or could maybe follow the designs of their predecessors (J-10 and J-13) and were sadly later cancelled.

Let's go !

Cheers, Deino

hmm... how about.....

taking the fuselage from a twin engined fighter, such as the f-111, a-5, mig-25, add mid-mounted swept wings(like the Q-5), or cranked delta(like the JH-7), Q-5 style tailfins, but 2 instead of one(thats how you KNOW its a 4th gen fighter), and a conical pointy nose, compared to bulbous ones of contemporaries.

Hmmm ... I just drew these two "concepts" ... the first from Chengdu (based on the early Revell Su-27 with side-by-side emgines, a single air-intake, ... not finished yet !

.... and the contender from Shenyang ... a Dassault Super-Mirage look-alike with Tornado-style intakes ... maybe I should change the single fin to two slightly outward canted fins .... ??!!!  :P

Go with the second one, with two fins  It looks more consistent with other chinese jets of the day.

Something like that. Mind if i take a try at kitbashing a chinese jet? I got an urge to put some hobbycraft kits out of their misery.

Well... I took the rear fuselage of a mig-25 and mated it with half of a.... Su-22 of all things. I put the nosecone of the foxbat onto the fitter and it looks pretty good. Wings will be more forward compared to the foxbat, and the intakes will be squared instead of ramp shaped. I'll post pictures once i find a good set of donor wings. So far its pretty big, close to flanker size, and looks quite clumsy... which is the look i was going for!

Have you figured out how youre going to do yours? Oh yeah... what kindve missiles would a 4th gen chinese fighter use?

Hmmm ... not sure about mine !

I think abaout a revised Shenyang design borrowed from an unused Mirage IV fuselage, mated to F-15 front section - maybe another canopy - F-15-like air-intakes, adding canards and a double delta section with wing-tips !

Something like this bird ... it's actually the twin engined proposal for the South African Cava !

Regarding the possible missiles I would use the PL-4 during its earlier career, then the PL-10/PL-11 (Sparrow-look alike) and the PL-8 (Phython III-copy) as used by the J-10 !

Whoa! What's that big aircraft at the back of the first picture? The one with the nose-up attitude, that looks just like a TSR-2?

gooberliberation

How convenient! I just got a Euro Typhoon to donate the wings. So mine just may end up looking just like that one in the back.

Hmm... I rather like the tailed delta look. So I will probably chop the wings just outboard of the gear doors.
