What if New Zealand got TSR.2?

Well, it's a good enough question. Some people may disagree that New Zealand would have been a customer for the aircraft, but as a Kiwi I'd like to believe this was the case. Not an enormous fleet, just a single squadron with six service aircraft and one trainer.

Between myself (backstory) and PolluxDeltaSeven (profiles) we are researching the history of the BAC TSR.2/BAe Eagle in Royal New Zealand Air Force. Due to several factors beyond our control the colour profiles have been delayed until the New Year, and we will not post the backstory until the profiles are all ready.

However, to whet your appetite, we present the BAe Eagle GR.6.

This is a rough image, so please forgive any inaccuracies.

Models will follow early next year - coincidentally the 20th year of Kiwi Eagle service.

PolluxDeltaSeven

Well!! We start the game!!

I have nothing to add exept a link with an HQ profile of our Eagle GR.6...

Hope you'll like it... ;)

Oh, this topic could be the good place to ask if somebody here already saw a picture or a model of Kiwi TSR.2??
I remember a lot of Aussie, South African and even Indian TSR.2, but no NZ...
Doesn't this part of the Commonwealth deserve one of the greatest and most beautiful plane ever?? ;)

Thank you Pollux, I know we're teammates but it's good to see someone else who thinks NZ deserves TSR.2.

Now, let the opinions begin! I can't wait til we unveil the entire lot of backstory and profiles! Excellent! B)

Well you had Scooters and look what you did with them! You just cant be trusted with nice things   :P

Joking aside, cant wait to see your KiwEagles guys!
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

I know the TSR.2 plane was very expensive, but the French government would have paid fot it, as penalty   for the Rainbow Warrior/Greenpeace affair :( towards NZ
Or... am I mixing dates and chronology?

Rainbow Warrior was bombed on July 10 1985. Had it gone into production the the TSR.2 would no doubt have still been in service, and perhaps still selling in updated versions, so sure, go for it!

Thanks Lee - the original profile was from Thunder And Lightnings.

And Tophe - guess what? NZ bought the TSR.2 in 1986! Negotiations began in 1984, so perhaps the French made an "out of court settlement" with us?   BRILLIANT!

QuoteI don't know where you got that side view from, but it's completely out. The nose is too raised and the whole back end is wrong - TSR2 didn't have a nib for the parachute housing because it's actually between the engines and the section hinges upwards on release. Plus the tailerons should have a slight anhedral.
That's exactly why we call it "what if" ! ;)

In fact, I draw the side view myself, inspired by a profile send by Z5054NZ... But it's just inspiration!

The nose was redrawn, idem for the base of the tail, and part of the canopy... Just because this plane is not the prototype but an operationnal version, moreover an operationnal version from the 1980's...
It's just like the differences between the prototype of the Tornado and the operationnal Tornado ADV, or between the prototype of Mirage 2000 and the operational Mirage 2000-5 Mk2.
I had to include in the design the place for the radars, the ECM and other counter-measure units, that's why it looks a little bit different. But well, I don't know how much scratch K5054NZ want to do, so the models could look much more loke the original prototype... What do you think Zac?

But well, I admit that if I based my drawing on the profile you post, Wooksta, I think I had drawn the nose differently, maybe just a little bit less raised... I dunno...

Do you have a bigger view of this profile??

Well I for one buy the idea of 20 years of development changing the look of the aircraft a litttle and think that PD7's profile looks better than the original article.

I'm sure Lee will love this analogy, but look at how the Phantom changed over the years, especially the front end.

So I got that going for me...which is nice....

Monsieur Lacombe - Vous pouvez répéter que dans l'anglais s'il vous plaît?

Lee - as PD7 said, the nib is ECM. We just can't be bothered WHAT KIND of ECM it is, it just looks cool!

AeroDriver - it does look better, doesn't it? I think my first whiffgasm originated from that profile. Ah.....GR.6  ...

PD7 - I want to do some scratchbuilding on the Eagles! I don't mind finding enough new antennae and such. and it'll be a challenge getting a new radome, but it can only INCREASE my skills, so BRING IT ON! The idea is that this is an upgraded service Eagle, not a TSR.2 prototype like XR219 or '220. Let your imagination run wild!

Oh I'm sure about it Retro!   :P

I'm tempted in drawing a better looking TSR.2 for myself, I don't like the way the upper fuselage slopes, it makes the thing look old in profile...
