But applying the desert camo took so long, the war was over before the masking and painting had been finished, so the whole thing was kept rather hush-hush.

Brilliant!!!    

The funny thing is, masking those things doesn't take much time at all - it's all done with massive pre-cut masks that fit together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. A friend of mine related the story of being ordered to paint a truck in that scheme, and the whole crew going crazy trying to figure out the scheme and mask it with tape. Supposedly, they managed a fair approximation of the scheme - then the Lieutenant showed up and had them redo it again, this time with the regulation masks...
