V-Bomber Lancaster

I was planning to make a turboprop V-bomber Lanc using An-12 wings but I've only got one An-12 kit so I decided to go with a rear wing/canard layout using Tu-95 bits.

Here's the mock up:

Fitting the wings, getting them at the right height and alignment is going to be tough. I though that I would build a box section spar between the wings then cut the bottom out of the fuselage and fit the wings in one piece. I'd then have to restore the fuselage section and spend many hours chanting JHM's mantra puttysandrepeat, puttysandrepeat, puttysandrepeat... More updates as they happen.

this one will be not an easy conversion
you are using the Tu-95 from trumpeter?....
not cheap conversion too.... ;)

Hmmm,

Where have I seen something like that before?

Looking good - can't wait to see the result.

You are one brave man, Simon!

As the man says: "Go for it!"

This will turn out to be one of the most interesting subjects ever done on this site.  Can't wait to see it finished!

Yes, Trumpeter Tu-95, Hasegawa Lancaster and I also had to buy an Airfix Vulcan to get the Blue Steel nuclear weapon and the correct decals. It's not cheap so I've got to make all this work!  :dum:

Well if you're gonna make a proper V-bomber, you need a proper V-name

How about... Vigilant, Vigor, Vagrant, Villain...?

Well, either way, it looks damned cool

One day in and the project is in TSR.2 type levels of trouble...

Just testing for the fit of the wings and fuselage here, I can't actually fit the fuselage under the wings until I cut a big section out of the top. The good news is that the Tu-95 nose gear fits perfectly in the forward part of the Lancaster bomb bay, but that's pretty much all the good news. The level of the wings is set by the height of the landing gear and the top of the wings is going to be marginally *above* the top of the Lancaster fuselage. This means there's going to be much effort and difficulty involved blending it all in.

I made some bigger tip tanks (not pictured) today also. I think if you're going haul a Blue Steel over the polar ice cap to Sov City and make it back to Cottesmore in time for last orders in the pub then you need all the fuel you can get.

Looking at this photo, I realise that it could look better with a longer fuselage. So, I may have to buy *another* Hasegawa Lanc and extend the fuselage by about 4 scale metres. The Lanc has a constant fuselage cross-section so this wouldn't be difficult, just expensive!

More next weekend...

Amazing!

Keep it up...

Difficult, no doubt, but---did you also notice how exciting it is to see the mock-up in that very believable configuration like it's sitting on a tarmac somewhere?

The promise it shows is so evident.  Like one of Eddie's conceptuals, this one is definitely "whispering" to you, Simon!
