read on another forum when Airbus started planning the A400m they requested from Bombardier any data they had on the Belfast. Really think some one in Bombardier should be dusting the drawings out and seeing about mating new engines to the wings.

It would be interesting to see some different paint schemes like the RAF middle east cammo or grey/green.

If anyone's interested, a local model shop to me, who's stock appears to be 50% someone's stash being sold off, has a vac-form Belfast on the shelf. Can't remember the price, unfortunately, but I'll cheerfully go and look/pick it up/post it if anyone wants it badly enough.....

I thought this had gone, but when I went in today and bought some Canberras, it was still there. it's the Welsh Models 1/144th Belfast model and they want £13 for it.

No, its the one at Brookside garden centre near Poynton. It's mostly railways, but they do have various warships amongst the kits. From memory and probably incomplete:

1/700th-ish USN assault ship (probably Tarawa class). Can't recall the make.
1/700th-ish Tico (Alabama Bay?) Can't recall the make.
Maybe a modern carrier,
A Revell US battleship in an odd but big scale
Various small scale Heller kits (1/1200th?): Suffren (the modern DDG), Colbert (pre CG conversion), Roma

A local toy shop has a few kits in, including a Heller 1/400th La Fayette class frigate for £9, which seemed like a good deal to me.

Provisionally taken (assuming it's still there).

Had a proper look now, and put a full list up here:

I like it! The An-32's Ivchenko AI-20Ms put out 5180 shp each (maybe add the An-30's jet boost?).

But how about a twin Belfast as a jumbo C-27 -- twin 14800 shp Kuznetsov NK-12s driving 8-blade contra-rotating props?  ;D

The AI-20M's are a bit too dinky, the Tynes on the Belfast develop 5400 shp.  I vaguely recall a Russian turboprop in the 7-8000 shp range?  If there is one, that should do nicely.

The RR Tynes and the unfortunately cancelled Orion props could be had in flavours of up to 8,000+hp but no one stumped up the cash to do any real testing. I had heard that an increased weight, faster and slightly bigger Belfast with 8,250hp Tynes was talked about though I doubt it got beyond napkin drawings. A real shame as there was a lot of potential in these aircraft (look at the Herc and AN-12 history with the ongoing development in the 130J and Y-8/9 series). Glad that at least one is still going strong down in Australia as well (though I heard maybe a 2nd aircraft was reactivated or going to be soon?).

Looking at the specs of the A400M I am of the thinking that if the Belfast was stuck with and developed then the current version would be a significantly better performer than the the A400M considering what the basic Belfast could do back then, especially in payload.

Would be interesting to see more some what if's with modern engines (maybe even using 4 x 30,000lb RR RJ.500 turbofans (similar tech to the BR7xx family but a bit bigger or the AN-70's propfans), also gunship, spec ops and tanker versions.

Apologies again for kicking an old thread off but maybe more Belfast info.models/mockups have surfaced since the last post.

No need for apologies.  The purpose of this section is to consolidate information on specific subjects into a working data base of sorts.  Instead of searching for individual snippets of information across the entire discussion forum all you have to do is go to the subject discussion topic and read through it.  Adding your own input is welcomed and encouraged.  What is not wanted is one-liner, or emoticons that take up space and detract from the continuity of the discussion topic, that can be applied to other sections of the forum where it is appropriate when conveying your feelings on a subject under discussion.

Thanks, wasn't quite sure of the protocal as I normally don't get involved in forums but this one interested me greatly and it is also unusual to see so many intelligent and well researched posts and of course some great model and graphic work, really outstanding.

You seem to have an insight into the British aircraft industry norseman, I'm guessing you have some experience there?
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Maybe in the engine side of the house???

I used to work on military flight simulators (physics model and technical accuracy modelling) though this gave lots of scope for a degree of "what if" models for "testing" before hand over to the customer . I have also worked in the PC simulation market many years ago and contracted on a number of European defence projects. Have a close "beer circle" of ex RR, BAe and current Selex & Saab friends.

Was speaking to a mate who worked on the Tucano production line at shorts as that was winding down they were tasked to clear a shed on site due to be demolished to make way for the new George best airport terminal. In it was sales lit and models of the belfast all went in a skip
